June 17, 2008 - That’s me on the floor after the Boston Celtics celebrated banner 17.
Working at their radio rights holder for a few years gave me a rare glimpse at the people and culture that existed and it feels like still exists there today. Because of that, I have always respected and admired the Celtics organization!
It was 2007 as they were embarking on redefining the brand and setting the stage for a championship run. They worked hard to shed the image of “we just play basketball” to instead focus on entertaining fans and focus on Championships.
Rich Gotham, their President said something often that I love because I believe it is the difference between greatness in the sports business and mediocrity:
“We don’t win championships to sell tickets, we sell tickets to win championships.”
If winning is your only marketing and brand strategy, it’s time to reevaluate.
Congrats to the Celtics on Banner 18 and a huge shoutout to the amazing people who produced championship content and storytelling all season long for the team. Incredible work across the board.
