Observation

Senior leaders' small kindnesses to young employees can shape careers and relationships for…

The recent announcement of the retirement of the first senior executive I ever worked with inspired me to write today. I was 23 years old at my first “real job”. I was tasked with driving our Regional VP to the airport. I was so nervous! She got in the car and could not have been more amazing to me. I often think of that moment as I interact with younger employees.

Fast forward 14 years later, 4 years after I left that company and I get my role with the Padres. One of the first messages I received was from her. She shared her memories of our initial meeting and my successes through the years. I was blown away about how much she had invested in me, even after I stopped working for her.

Fast forward two years later and I am negotiating a deal with my former company. They let me know that the COO coming into town finish up the negotiations... yup you guessed it, that original senior executive.

It’s a great reminder that you never know who is sitting next to you, or walking by. I always remember that the young employee who drove me to the airport yesterday may some day be sitting across from me during a negotiation or even better during a job interview...

Smile, treat everyone with care and kindness... because why not???
