“Sometimes You Have to Rely on Your Past to Power the Present”
Failure wasn’t an option. But the results? Not what I expected. 💥
I left my DJ career in Boston. Suddenly, I was an executive with the Miami Dolphins on Draft Night. The event was set—talk show on stage, beers cold, food hot. But something was off.
The energy? Flat.
I knew how to energize a crowd. But I wasn’t DJ Wayne anymore. The MC, a talented sportscaster, was doing his best. But it wasn’t working.
So, what do I do?
I realized I had experience to offer, but was that really the right move? Failure is not an option!
I grabbed the mic. “MIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIAMI Dolphins aaaaaaaaaare you readaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!!!!”
The crowd responded.
The energy changed.
The event soared.
Lesson? Every experience shapes us. Even the ones that feel unrelated to our current role. Trust those lessons. They’ll come in handy.

I saw this picture from last week’s The Gathering Summit and was so excited about this subject!

A very important lesson that I learned as a DJ was to always choose my clients carefully!

Observation
The interaction between a DJ and their crowd is a masterclass in awareness. You need to have strong self awareness, while also possessing a firm grip on situational awareness to ensure the audience is buying what you are selling.
