There is so much more than being skilled at a job to make you a great leader and the extra effort is almost always more important to your team.

There is so much more than being skilled at a job to make you a great leader and the extra effort is almost always more important to your team.

To be a great leader for your team you need to earn the trust of the people on your team, but more importantly you need to earn the trust of the people above you. Without that trust you can not be the best for your people. So how does one go about gaining that trust?

1. Find a way to provide value to those above you. Study their needs and provide solutions to those needs.

2. Put yourself in the right place at the right time. Many people will perceive these moments as “lucky”, but if you can master the art of being where you need to be to provide timely and needed value, you will quickly start to gain trust.

3. Be prepared with answers to all of the questions that may come your way. Some of these may be out of your control, but your ability to see problems and identify solutions will show itself as a powerful asset for that leader.

4. Never miss an opportunity for an out of office experience with your leader(s). These casual encounters will provide you insight into them as people and vice versa.

When I was starting a new job a much younger, junior employee pulled me aside. He said, “there will be a moment when the bosses invite you for social opportunity and your answer will be yes! I like you and you’re going to be great, but know that when that line is extended to you it is with purpose. So take that opportunity and make the most of it.”

That moment did come, my answer was yes and what followed was the greatest day of learning I had had in a long time. I learned about the person, they learned about me and I had the opportunity to share my opinions on a wide list of topics. That day was just beginning of a great relationship.

Sometimes it’s the extra effort that makes all of the other work shine.
