“It’s been a pleasure to work with you, I know someday I may end up working for you!”
That’s how the boss at my internship said goodbye as I exited to go start full-time at a competitor. His humility was shocking in that moment because of how much reverence I had for him.
I’ve borrowed that line as some superstars moved on from my teams through the years, but there is a big lesson in that short statement:
Treat everyone with respect no matter where you or they sit in the org chart. Positions change, people move around, but how you treat people will never be forgotten.
