Listening is important, but what you hear should not be the only guiding principle for your business.
Listening is important, but what you hear should not be the only guiding principle for your business.
I love to listen to what outside people have to say about my work, but I learned a while ago that as important as it is to listen, it’s even more important to filter the feedback. When you have a vision for where you want to take a company, it’s often difficult for someone outside of your team to completely grasp and buy into it the way that you all do. If you are reacting to every bit of feedback by altering the plan, you will inevitably prove your critics correct and not deliver your vision. I often challenge our clients to imagine that person stopping them on the street to offer that same feedback and ask how they would handle it. For most the social feedback is usually treated with more weight, but it is actually the same. You should never let anyone that’s doesn’t have a full understanding of the goal distract you from achieving it.
Last reminder, it’s easy for others to forecast your failure, because just by the numbers they will be right more often than not, but it doesn’t mean you can’t succeed. It means, that most people won’t believe that you can and you shouldn’t let that stop you. These two didn’t!
