Observation

Own your unconventional past (DJ, no college) instead of hiding it; it becomes a strength…

When I first transitioned to working for a sports team, I stopped DJing. I regret trying to leave that in my past. I thought when I got to a certain level in my career or achieved certain title there was a “proper” way to behave or an image to portray. My bosses loved talking about my experiences, but I was always be a little shy about it because of my own insecurities.

The judgement happens either way, so you might as well own who you are and how you got there. Be you! I used to live in fear that someone would learn that I didn’t go to college or that I was a DJ. Then one day I was challenged to just be me! Later that week, I took that advice to heart and I added a DJ console to my office. It became this incredible conversation starter and all of the people I feared learning about my past were very interested in hearing about it. Those conversations among so many others are what has given me the confidence to share my journey publicly.

I love that the CEO of Goldman Sachs has found something that makes him happy and even though it doesn’t fit the “standard” of what he or his title should be, he has chosen to be happy!
